Babuji Rajendra Shilpi
A legacy in art and design
“He was my father and likely the reason I immersed myself in the world of art.” – Darshana Shilpi Rouget, Founder
Babuji Shilpi (1927–2016) was an interdisciplinary artist and designer based in Bombay, India. His practice spanned painting, sculpture, jewellery, textiles, interior architecture, and furniture. He ran one of India’s most successful toy factories, creating developmental educational toys, and served as honorary director of the All India Handicraft Board's Toy Centre.
His fine art drew inspiration from Indian miniature painting and surrealism, and he extensively documented India’s independence movement through his paintings—one of which is on display at Mani Bhavan, the museum dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi in Mumbai. A contemporary and friend of renowned artists Tyeb Mehta, Raza, and Hussain, Babuji Shilpi also fought in the non-violent freedom movement under Gandhi.
Although his original works are no longer available to buy, we are proud to offer a selection as limited edition scarves—pieces you can wear or frame.
