In 1921, the year Man Ray settled in Paris, he made his first “rayograph” by placing objects on light-sensitive paper and exposing them to light. The artist delightedly described this new technique to a friend in 1922, writing, “I have finally freed myself from the sticky medium of paint, and am working directly with light itself.”
The transparent quality of this silk scarf further enhances the interplay of light and shadow in Man Ray’s original rayograph.
